The Buccaneers played host Rose State College to a scoreless tie for more than 106 minutes before sophomore defender Anderson Micolta tapped in a goal from close range to give Blinn a 1-0 double-overtime victory in Midwest City, Okla.
Micolta’s game-winner came off an assist from freshman forward Toby Lansdowne in the 107th minute of play.
Fourth-year Blinn head coach Michael McBride said he and his team approached the match much like a preseason game, deploying multiple formations and strategies with several different players as he continues to build a regular rotation.
“We learned a lot about our team and some of our weaknesses today,” McBride said. “It wasn’t the best we could’ve played, but it was a great result under the circumstances, and we know what we need to work on.
“Our men put in a lot of work and effort today, and they earned this win.”
Buccaneer sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Pena made three saves to preserve the shutout.
Blinn finished with 19 shots, including five on goal, while Rose State had 11 shots with three on goal.
The Buccaneers remain on the road and will visit 2021 Region 2 champion University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain for an 11 a.m. tilt Wednesday in Mena, Ark.
“We’re excited to face Rich Mountain,” McBride said. “It’s going to be a real test.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
