Blinn College’s Brenham and Bryan campus student government associations earned top honors at the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) Region IV convention recently held on the Blinn-Bryan campus.
Jessica Avery of the Blinn-Bryan Student Government Association (SGA) was recognized as Region IV student of the year for her extracurricular involvement, academic achievement and contributions to SGA. Dr. Mary Barnes-Tilley, Blinn-Brenham SGA advisor, was selected as Region IV advisor of the year for her role in local and regional SGA groups, the TJCSGA and community activities.
“It is such a great honor to be nominated by this group of students of whom I think so highly,” Barnes-Tilley said. “Watching them grow into leaders on campus, then carry those skills with them to universities and careers has been a wonderful experience I will always cherish.”
Blinn now qualifies for the opportunity to earn the same designations at the state TJCSGA conference in April. Blinn earned the distinction of state student of the year in 2008 and 2014, and advisor of the year in 2012 and 2014.
The Region IV SGAs voted Blinn-Bryan SGA to hold the position of Region IV president and Blinn-Brenham to hold vice president. Blinn-Brenham was also selected to host the Fall Region IV convention.
TJCSGA Region IV consists of Blinn’s campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Sealy and Schulenburg, Austin Community College, Hill College’s Johnson and Hillsboro campuses and Wharton County Junior College’s Wharton, Richmond and Sugar Land campuses.
Blinn’s SGAs serve as the official voice of the student body. Each year, the SGAs host blood drives, sponsor charitable events, assist with distinguished lectures and more.
