BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College softball team upset No. 12 San Jacinto College-South with a pair of wins at Hohlt Park Saturday.
The Buccaneers opened the doubleheader with a 3-2 win over San Jacinto, then defeated the Coyotes 4-3 in 11 innings to conclude the day.
With the win, the Buccaneers are now 12-14 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
“The most notable thing today is that we competed all 18 innings,” head coach Rick Church said.
Blinn 3 – San Jacinto 2
Blinn opened the doubleheader against San Jacinto with a 3-2 win.
Renna Toomey earned the win in the circle after surrendering just two runs on six hits in seven innings.
The Buccaneers totaled nine hits in the win. Shaelyn Sanders recorded two hits and one run, and Chloe Woodward and Kendall Johnson each recorded two hits and one RBI to lead the offense. In addition, Chandler Tablot and Toomey each scored one run, while Mikaela Lopez drove in one run.
Blinn opened the game with one run in the first inning when Sanders scored on a fielder’s choice. Blinn extended its lead to 2-0 in the third when Toomey hit a double then scored on Woodward’s single.
In the sixth inning, Blinn loaded the bases as Toomey got on due to an error and Woodward and Emily Murphy each hit singles. Then, Talbot scored on Johnson’s single for the Buccaneers to take a 3-0 lead.
San Jacinto finally landed on the board with two runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough for the win.
Blinn 4 – San Jacinto 3
The Buccaneers concluded the doubleheader with a 4-3 win in 11 innings over San Jacinto for the sweep.
Sanders sealed the win in the circle after only surrendering one earned run on eight hits in 11 innings.
Keely Castillo went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Buccaneers. Woodward, Italie Speziale-Potter, Bailee Stanzione, and Emily Murphy each scored one run in the win.
Castillo hit a one-run single to give Blinn the lead in the opening inning.
San Jacinto scored two runs in the second inning to lead 2-1. However, the Buccaneers evened the score 2-2 in the fourth inning when Murphy scored on an error.
The Coyotes pulled back ahead 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning, but Blinn evened the score 3-3 in the bottom of the inning when Speziale-Potter scored on Castillo’s sacrifice fly.
The game remained tied until the 11th inning when Stanzione scored on an error for the Buccaneers to walk off with the win.
Next, the Buccaneers will compete against Galveston College in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 14, starting at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
