ALVIN, Texas — The Blinn College softball team split a doubleheader against Alvin Community College Saturday on the road.  

Alvin slipped past Blinn, 3-2, to open the doubleheader. However, the Buccaneers bounced back with a 9-0 run-rule win in six innings to conclude the day. 

With the split, the Buccaneers are now 9-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play. 

“We pitched a one-hitter and two-hitter today, so it is too bad it didn’t translate into two wins,” head coach Rick Church said.

Alvin 3 – Blinn 2  

Alvin came from behind in the fourth inning to defeat the Buccaneers, 3-2, to open the doubleheader. 

Renna Toomey pitched a gem, not allowing an earned run. She surrendered just one hit, while striking out seven, in six innings. 

Emily Murphy led the offense with two hits. Italie Speziale-Potter and Samantha Rodriguez each scored one run, and Skylar Shanahan drove in one run. 

Shanahan hit a one-run single for Speziale-Potter to score the first run in the first inning. Then, Rodriguez scored on an error in the top of the fourth for the Buccaneers to extend their lead, 2-0. 

Alvin took advantage of three errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to score three runs. The Lady Dolphins held the 3-2 lead for the remainder of the game for the win. 

Blinn 9 – Alvin 0 

The Buccaneers finished the day on a high note with a 9-0 run-rule win in six innings. 

Nevada Dolnik earned the win in the circle after throwing six scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. 

Mikaela Lopez had four hits and drove in four RBIs to lead the Buccaneers on offense. Chloe Woodward totaled three hits and scored two runs, while Amy Hitt recorded two hits and two runs. 

After two scoreless innings, Blinn landed on the board with one run in the third inning. Lopez drove in the run with a single for Hitt to score. 

The Buccaneers added two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-0. Bailee Stanzione scored on an error, while Hitt hit a one-run single in the fourth. Then, Lopez hit a one-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. 

Blinn scored its final four runs in the sixth inning. Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice fly, Woodward hit a one-run single, and Lopez hit a two-run double for the Buccaneers to hold a 9-0 advantage. 

Next, the Buccaneers will face off against Coastal Bend College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31, starting at 1 p.m. on the road. 

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
