HOUSTON, Texas — The Blinn College softball team fell to Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 1-0, in the NJCAA Region XIV-South Softball Tournament Monday.
With the loss, the Buccaneers were eliminated from the postseason tournament and end the season with a 22-19 overall record.
“Renna Toomey pitched a great last game in her Blinn career,” head coach Rick Church said. “It is disappointing that we couldn’t get her some run support. We wish the best of luck to our sophomores moving on.”
Toomey had an impressive outing in the circle for the Buccaneers. She only surrendered one run on six hits, while striking out four in six innings.
Shaelyn Sanders led the Buccaneers with two hits, while Emily Murphy and Samantha Rodriguez each had one.
After four scoreless innings, Lamar State-Port Arthur scored on a one-run double to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.
The Buccaneers rallied in the seventh inning by loading the bases. Rodriguez hit a single, Toomey landed on base on an error, and Amy Hitt drew a walk to lead off the inning. However, Lamar State-Port Arthur managed to record the final three outs needed for the win.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
