The Blinn College women’s soccer team made a bit more history Friday with a big Region XIV victory over Angelina College.
The Buccaneers earned a 2-0 win over the Roadrunners in Lufkin, Texas, giving Blinn its first-ever triumph against its conference rival.
The Buccaneers’ women’s soccer program launched in 2018.
The two teams played to a stalemate through the first half, but a pair of goals across the final 45 minutes of play gave the Bucs the win.
“Great teams find a way to win, and that is exactly what we did tonight,” said Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson. “Our players showed toughness and grit during a heavily even match. I’m so proud of these players.”
Blinn added to its program record single-season win total as it moved to 8-2 overall, and matched its single-season high in conference wins as it jumped to 5-1 in the region standings and remained in first place in the South division.

The Bucs scored the only goal they would need in the 60th minute when sophomore midfielder Rileigh Toner fielded an assist from sophomore forward Emeyda Cruz and deposited on a shot from the top of the box for a 1-0 lead.
Freshman midfielder Karleigh Villanueva gave Blinn some insurance when she collected a feed from freshman forward Paola Brizuela Razo and scored in the 75th minute.
The Bucs finished with 11 shots, including two on goal.
Blinn freshman goalkeeper Madison Ortiz played 70 minutes and made five saves while fellow freshman went 20 minutes with two saves.
The Bucs continue their season with a region home tilt against Region XIV’s newest member, Texas Southmost College, at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, at Rankin Field inside Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
