The Blinn College esports Overwatch team continued its run in the Activision Blizzard Collegiate Homecoming tournament with two more victories in the Swiss Stage round.
The Buccaneers swept Texas A&M University White in Swiss State 7 on Sept. 29 and blanked George Mason University in Swiss Stage 8 on Monday, winning both best-of-five series 3-0.
The annual tournament is currently in the Swiss Stage round, which consists of 10 stages. Blinn is 5-3 with two matches remaining.
Competing for Blinn were Haluk Tanriseven, Donnivan Straight, Andrew Dugas, Javier Amezcua, and Matthew Hutchings.
“In our match against Texas A&M White, we initially encountered a bit of a shaky start,” said Blinn assistant coach and Overwatch manager Kyle Murto. “However, our team quickly regrouped and turned things around as we progressed into the second map. From there on, we showcased our dominance and determination. Our performance against George Mason University was equally impressive, as we maintained momentum and executed our strategies flawlessly. It was a display of our consistent excellence and teamwork.”
Blinn will continue Collegiate Homecoming play with Stages 9 and 10 at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Bucs’ opponents are not revealed until a few days prior to the matches.
Following the Swiss Stage, the top 32 ranked teams will qualify for a single-elimination round. The eight remaining teams in the single-elimination round will then advance to a double-elimination bracket. Murto said in order for the Bucs to advance, they will need to win their final two Swiss Stage matches and have the results of some other matches in the tournament fall in their favor.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
