The Blinn College esports Overwatch team completed a clean sweep of the Overwatch Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup – Texas Qualifiers Group Stage on Monday.
A pair of 3-0 victories in best-of-five play over the University of Texas-Arlington and the University of Texas-Dallas gave the Buccaneers a 4-0 record in the Group Stage and punched their tickets for a return trip to the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup.
Blinn Overwatch will represent Texas in the national competition.
Competing for Blinn were Haluk Tanriseven, Matthew Hutchings, Dhruv Pandrangi, Donnivan Straight, and Jaden Cornett.
“From the moment the matches began, it was evident that we were in a league of our own,” Blinn assistant coach and Overwatch manager Kyle Murto said. “With meticulous preparation and foresight, we entered each matchup fully equipped to tackle whatever challenges came our way.”
The Bucs will make their third appearance at the Commissioners Cup, which w takes place May 3-5 at the Esports Stadium Arlington in Arlington, Texas. Twenty teams will compete for the Cup.
Blinn also qualified for the tournament in 2022 and 2023.
“We are looking strong after several days of upsets,” Murto added. “We came into this competition once again the underdogs, but I know my players and this team. We are capable of going toe-to-toe with the best teams in the nation. We will continue to improve and show the nation what we are capable of. This is only the first and second semester for most of these players, so we have a bright path ahead of us.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 45 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
