Blinn College’s Overwatch team continued its unbeaten streak and the Buccaneer Call of Duty squad also picked up a win during esports action Wednesday.
Blinn defeated North Dakota State College of Science 3-0 in an NJCAA Esports Overwatch tilt and was a 3-1 victor against Carolina University in a National Association of College Esports (NACE) Call of Duty bout. Both matches were played in a best-of-five format.
Blinn Overwatch is now 2-0 in NJCAAe matchups and 5-0 overall (including NACE matches).
Competing for the Bucs were Haluk Tanriseven, Matthew Hutchings, Donnivan Straight, Andrew Dugas, and Javier Amezcua.
“The team has continued to progress in working on our synergy, as well as some new compositions, which we were able to play to perfection today,” said Blinn assistant coach and Overwatch manager Kyle Murto. “We came into this game very prepared, and our preparations showed as we were able to shut them out on every single map for a clean sweep. I was specifically proud of Haluk Tanriseven for leading the team and making some solid decisions throughout multiple team fights. These calls were instrumental in our victories.”
Blinn’s Call of Duty quartet of Logan Rivera, David Rodriguez, Landon Campos, and Eroin Hernandez earned the Bucs their first NACE win and third overall victory of the season. Blinn is a combined 3-2 in Call of Duty play.
The Bucs dropped the first map to Carolina before rebounding to win three straight and the series.
“We started off shaky dropping the first map 250-223, and we barely snagged a map two victory,” said Blinn assistant coach and Call of Duty manager Ryan Lucich. “Once we started to get going, we were easily able to win maps three and four to take the series. Logan Rivera really controlled the pace of map three before David Rodriguez put on a monster performance in game four. I’m proud of the team for shaking off a slow start and getting back to the form we have been showing over the last week. I hope this energy continues as we have some tough opponents coming up.”
The Bucs play their next Call of Duty tilt in an NJCAAe clash against Iowa Western Community College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Blinn Overwatch continues play with a NACE matchup against Bethan Lutheran College at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 26. The Buccaneers’ Super Smash Bros squad takes on Oklahoma Christian University in NACE play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
