The Blinn College esports Overwatch team finished its run in the Activision Blizzard Collegiate Homecoming Overwatch tournament with a pair of victories.
The Buccaneers earned two 3-0 sweeps in best-of-five play, defeating Oklahoma Christian University and California State University-Fullerton in Swiss Stage 9 and Swiss Stage 10, respectively.
The Buccaneers finished 7-3 overall, and placed 50th out of more than 300 collegiate esports teams competing in the tournament. The top 32 teams at the conclusion of the Swiss Stage qualified for the next round.
Competing for Blinn were Haluk Tanriseven, Donnivan Straight, Andrew Dugas, Javier Amezcua, and Matthew Hutchings.
“I feel like we played really well, it just came down to one week where we didn’t have a good grip on the state of the game at the time, which caused us to drop two games, and that’s on us,” said Blinn assistant coach and Overwatch manager Kyle Murto. “Other than that, we played better than I think we expected going into the semester. I’m really proud of what we accomplished.”
The Bucs’ Overwatch collegiate league season continues with a National Association of Collegiate Esports tilt against the University of Texas-Dallas at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.? For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
