The Blinn College men’s golf team concluded an exceptional showing at the Centenary/Hal Sutton Invitational on Tuesday, placing two teams first and second in the 10-team tournament at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Bossier City, La.
The Blinn College Blue squad of sophomores Van Miller, Ty Thomas, Cameron Hubbard, Sam Sewell, and Carson Wray finished first overall at 37-over par. The Buccaneers’ White team of sophomore Cole McClellan and freshmen Van Wilborn, Austin Hassell, McKane Kiser, and Jacob Holloway finished second at 40-over.
“It was great to win this week, and it was even better that the White team finished in second,” Blinn head coach David Johnson said. “There was a bunch of good competition going on between our two teams. I believe they forgot about all the other teams and didn’t want to lose to each other. The cold temperatures and windy conditions didn’t lead to low scoring, but I thought we played well on a demanding golf course. Everyone contributed on both teams and that is what it takes to win golf tournaments. Congrats to all of our players.”
Individually, Hubbard placed fifth in the 53-man field after shooting 6-over. McClellan finished 7-over for sixth pace and Kiser tied for seventh at 8-over. Sewell was 9-over par to finish tied for ninth.
The Blinn men will continue their season at the Blinn Spring Invitational on Monday, April 3, at the Brenham Country Club, in Brenham, Texas.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
