Entering his eighth season as Blinn College’s head football coach, Mahon officially signed a recruiting class of 48 players Wednesday who will join his team this fall.
The class, which includes 40 in-state athletes, is one of Mahon’s largest since his tenure began in 2016.
“We found a lot of really great talent that we just couldn’t pass up,” said Mahon. “We had a lot of holes to fill, and we feel great about how we went about filling those.”
Blinn’s conference, the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, allows its member teams 15 out-of-state signees each year, but Mahon said Texas’ reputation as a football hotbed makes in-state recruiting a no-brainer.
“Football is such a high brand in Texas, it doesn’t make much sense for us to leave the state unless it’s a very special individual,” Mahon said. “We found a few of those, but we also understand the high level of talent that resides in Texas, so we went after it.”
Mahon went on to say that the best part of recruiting season is an opportunity to compete with other coaches across the nation as they do their best to reel in top recruits.
“Competing against other coaches who are recruiting the same kid, that’s a big part of the fun. We don’t get to compete as much anymore as coaches, so this provides an opportunity for that,” Mahon explained. “Then you get a chance to meet these kids, you get to know them and then get to show off this great place. Blinn makes recruiting easy. Our campus and facilities do most of the work for us.”
In total, the Buccaneers signed 10 defensive backs; nine offensive linemen; seven linebackers; six defensive linemen; six wide receivers; three quarterbacks; three running backs; two tight ends; one long snapper; and one athlete.
The recruiting class also features seven Washington County and Brazos County recruits, including Brenham High School’s Eric Aschenbeck (offensive line), Quenton Graves (defensive line), Ricky Brown (linebacker), and Savion Ragston (defensive back); A&M Consolidated High School’s Connor Cortez (long snapper); College Station High School’s Harrison Robinson (defensive back); and Navasota High School’s Deontray Scott (running back).
“We feel great about what we’re bringing in and have made it so we don’t have to go out scavenger hunting for missing pieces,” Mahon said. “We’ve set ourselves up to add as needed, but we really like what we have, and we’re excited moving forward.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
