Odessa College 11, Blinn College 5
The Buccaneers totaled eight hits but the Odessa offense proved to be too much.
Odessa broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning with a pair of runs, then added two more in the third and six in the fifth.
Blinn avoided a run-rule loss with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and added one more in the seventh.
Castillo finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Freshman Caitlyn Stevens also had two hits with a double and RBI. Whitley plated one run for the Buccaneers and Strange added a double. Talbot scored twice for Blinn.
“We just need to be better as a pitching staff,” Blinn head coach Rich Church said of his team’s first game Saturday. “We have to get better with our pitching and defense. The hitting was our highlight of the day. In that second game, we could’ve been run-ruled, but we prolonged things and kept hitting the ball. We scored 15 runs, which is good, we’ve just got to have better pitching and clean things up after some timely errors hurt us today.”
The Buccaneers resume their season with a home doubleheader against Temple College beginning at noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Hohlt Park.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
