The Blinn College District will show its support and appreciation for veterans throughout Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, as Blinn veterans share their stories through Zoom beginning at 11 a.m.

Part of the Communication Studies Speaker Series, “Honoring Our Blinn Veterans” will feature the voices of students, faculty, and staff as they discuss their service to the United States.

“We wanted to find a meaningful way to commemorate Veteran’s Day and create engagement between Blinn’s veterans and the wider community,” said Melissa Meek, Professor of Speech Communication. “This virtual event gives voice to our veteran servicemen and women by showcasing their individual stories and validating their experiences and sacrifices.”

The event will feature Chris Marrs, Executive Dean of the RELLIS Campus, as the keynote speaker from noon-1 p.m. During his presentation, “Everyday Leadership Challenges: Lessons Learned as a U.S. Navy Officer,” Marrs will discuss how his 23 years as a naval aviator helped shape his character, commitment to service, and belief that everyone can learn to be a leader.

“As a community college, Blinn recognizes the importance of supporting the goals and aspirations of our students,” Marrs said. “I hope my military experiences will inspire others to unleash their potential, which can open doors to unexpected opportunities.”

In addition to Marrs, approximately a dozen Blinn student, faculty, and staff veterans will share their thoughts in short three-to-five-minute videos. To access these videos, visit Zoom and enter the password: Speech.

The Communication Speaker Series is organized by Blinn’s Department of Communication Studies. Students in this program learn to develop strong written and oral communication skills, conflict management techniques, and critical thinking skills in preparation for careers in the field or continuing their education at four-year universities.

This event, along with “Honoring Our Bravest” early registration opportunities, is one way Blinn acknowledges the vital role and commitment of veterans, U.S. active duty service members, and their families. Through the Veteran Services Office, Blinn provides support and resources as these individuals work to achieve their academic and professional goals.
