The Blinn College esports Overwatch team dropped a pair of matches in the Swiss Stage round of the Activision Blizzard Collegiate Homecoming tournament Saturday.
The Swiss Stage round consists of 10 stages.
The Buccaneers fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-1 in a best-of-five series in Stage 5 and lost a 3-0 decision to Shenandoah University in Stage 6.
“Our communication breakdowns, our individual positionings were all over the place, and we just did not have a good grasp on the current meta that the other teams did,” said Blinn assistant coach Kyle Murto, who oversees Blinn’s Overwatch squad. “Overall, today was a very disappointing day. We lost to two teams that we should not be losing to in my opinion. We will look to come back next week and take some matches.”
Competing for Blinn were Haluk Tanriseven, Andrew Dugas, Matthew Hutchings, Donnivan Straight, and Javier Amezcua.
The Bucs are now 3-3 in the Swiss Stage.
Blinn will continue Collegiate Homecoming play with Stages 7 and 8 at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Bucs’ opponents are not revealed until a few days prior to each match.
The Buccaneers’ next esports match will see their Rocket League team face James Madison University in a National Association of College Esports tilt at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
