A successful night of Blinn College esports saw the Buccaneer Overwatch and Call of Duty teams earn victories Wednesday.
Blinn’s Overwatch squad swept Southeast Community College 3-0 in a best-of-five NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) bout and its Call of Duty team also swept a best-of-five clash with Eastern Michigan University in National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) action.
The Buccaneer Overwatch team advanced to 5-0 in NJCAAe play and 10-1 between NJCAAe and NACE.
Competing for Blinn were Haluk Tanriseven, Donnivan Straight, Andrew Dugas, Matthew Hutchings, and Javier Amezcua.
“Going into the fifth week of NJCAAe, we felt exceedingly well prepared for Southeast Community College. Southeast put up a valiant fight but at the end of the day, our team and our players individually are just playing on a different level that few teams have been able to match,” said Blinn assistant coach Kyle Murto, who oversees the Overwatch team. “We played exceptionally well today and had a perfect sweep where we not only did not give up a single point, but we also didn’t let the opposing team take even a single tick of progress on any map. We are feeling very confident about making another national championship appearance this semester.”
Blinn Call of Duty defeated Eastern Michigan and improved to 2-4 in NACE play with the help of Logan Rivera, David Rodriguez, Landon Campos, and Michael Allen.
“Eastern Michigan played well, but we were really firing on all cylinders today,” said Blinn assistant coach and Call of Duty manager Ryan Lucich. “I hope we can continue this momentum as we prepare for the NJCAA playoffs and see how far we can go.”

Lucich added that Rivera played “outstandingly well” against Eastern Michigan and was the match MVP.
Blinn Call of Duty is 6-5 between NJCAAe and NACE tilts.
Next up for the Buccaneer Call of Duty team is an NJCAAe matchup against University of South Carolina-Sumter at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Blinn Overwatch takes on Dallas Baptist University in NACE play at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
