The Blinn College esports team defeated Oklahoma Christian University in a Super Smash Bros matchup Thursday.

The National Association of College Esports (NACE) matchup was contested in a best-of-three format, with the Buccaneers prevailing 2-1.

Blinn is now 1-2 in the NACE West-Central Conference.

“We put in a lot of scouting into Oklahoma Christian and really worked hard to prepare for their characters and playstyles,” said Blinn assistant coach and Super Smash Bros manager Kyle Murto. “We were able to identify several key weaknesses in how they played which would prove to be very helpful.”

Blinn won the opening round, lost the second, and took the third for the victory.

Competing for the Bucs were Tymarion McGuireJoshua DelossantosBrady Landry, and Tanner Hicks.

“I am proud of all my players,” Murto added. “They’ve taken the losses hard and have really been working towards getting their first win. Going against four-year universities is always going to be a difficult task, but we have a strong team and players, and while they are still adjusting to the competition, they are getting better at an exceptional rate.”

Blinn continues play in Super Smash Bros competition with a NACE matchup against the University of Texas-Dallas at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
