Blinn College baseball players and coaches recently gave back to the game that they love – and the community – by volunteering to help the youth players during the City of Brenham Spring Training.

Shop Austin County 300 x 600 Second TryPlayers as young as 4 years old took part in the Spring Training to learn the sport’s fundamentals and have fun at Leroy Dreyer Field on the Blinn-Brenham campus.

“This is all about getting kids out and having a good time while getting them acquainted with Blinn baseball,” said Blinn coach Harvey McIntyre.

Blinn players split into groups to teach the basics of hitting, fielding and throwing during the fifth annual event.

“It really is a blessing to give back and pass on the knowledge that I have been taught about the game,” said Beau O’Hara, a freshman infielder from Katy. “Being around the kids reminds me of playing baseball when I was young and it was pure fun to play.”

In addition to its participation in the City of Brenham Spring Training, Blinn baseball players read to elementary school students every Monday throughout the school year.

“Working with the youth takes me back to when I was that age,” said Sam McElreath, a freshman infielder from Brenham. “When the kids come out on the field you can just see their eyes light up, and it helps us realize how blessed we are to be here.”

During the 2014-15 school year, the Blinn College athletic department contributed more than 1,600 hours of community service.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 32 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
