BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team fell to Wharton County Junior College, 9-3, at Leroy Dreyer Field Tuesday.
With the loss, the Buccaneers are now 19-18 overall and 13-14 in conference play.
Jett Garcia went 2-for-4 to lead the offense with one run and one RBI. Garrison Weiss and Jack Schell each drove in one run, while Preston Hoffart and Nick Wolff each scored one run.
The pitching staff came together to strike out 16 batters. Tanner Sherrill gave up three earned runs and struck out six in the first three innings, while Patrick Hail surrendered four runs and struck out three in three innings of relief. Jake Olson came in for the final three innings and only gave up one run, while striking out seven.
Wharton scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Buccaneers landed on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut Wharton’s lead in half. Wolff was hit by a pitch and Garcia followed with a single to kick things off. Weiss drove in the first run with a single, then Schell followed with a single for the Buccaneers’ second run.
Wharton added two runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 8-2.
Blinn scored its final run in the seventh inning when Hoffart drew a walk, advanced to second and third on two wild pitches, and scored on Garcia’s double.
Wharton added its final run in the ninth inning.
Next, Blinn will continue the conference series against Wharton with a road game on Wednesday, April 28, at 6 p.m.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
