Seven Blinn College baseball and softball players were recently awarded NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards in recognition of their academic accomplishments.

“I am extremely happy for those individual student-athletes and pleased with how they represented the Blinn College athletic program,” said Scott Schumacher, Blinn athletic director.

Baseball players Hunter Lehman (Kyle) and Reed Robinson (Kingwood) and softball player Avery Mullendore (Fort Worth) received Superior Academic Achievement for earning a 3.8 grade point average (GPA) over at least 45 semester hours.

Lehman, who has signed with Texas A&M-Kingsville, played catcher for the Buccaneers and hit .289 in 50 games with 25 runs batted in. Robinson played in 30 games for Blinn baseball at third base and picked up 15 hits on the season.

Mullendore, awarded the Atkinson Cup as the top student-athlete at Blinn, was named defensive player of the NJCAA National Championships in St. George, Utah, and is heading to Tarleton State University.

Baseball players Seth Ballew (Sugar Land), Ryan Capel (Katy) and Cullen Jozwiak (Brenham) and softball player Jazzmin Fritz (Houston) were named to the Exemplary Academic Achievement list. Students must maintain a 3.6 GPA with the same requirements to qualify.

Ballew is heading to Sam Houston State University to pitch after battling through injuries this season. Capel appeared in six games on the mound for the Buccaneers while Jozwiak led the team in at-bats (176) and hit .335. Jozwiak has signed with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for next season.

Fritz appeared in 30 games for Blinn softball and hit .311 in 61 at-bats.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 32 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit: www.buccaneersports.com.
