The Bellville Brahmas opened their 2024 football season with a valiant effort but ultimately fell to the Celina Bobcats 49-30 in a non-league matchup on Friday night. Despite the loss, several Brahmas players delivered impressive performances, showcasing their potential for the season ahead.

Offensive Highlights

Senior running back Dd Murray led the charge for Bellville, racking up 143 rushing yards on 17 carries, including a standout 97-yard run. Murray also contributed significantly in the air, hauling in the Brahmas’ only reception of the night for 31 yards. His efforts resulted in two touchdowns, accounting for half of Bellville’s total points.

Senior Corrian Hood also made a notable impact on the ground, rushing for 59 yards on 11 carries and finding the end zone twice. Junior Kendrick Turner added 12 yards on two carries, while sophomore Travis Turner and junior Izak Hranicky combined for seven more yards.

Quarterback Ryan Broz had a tough night in the passing game, completing just one of five attempts for 31 yards. However, his 31-yard connection with Murray provided a key play that kept the Brahmas in contention during the first half.

 

 

Defensive Standouts

On the defensive side, senior Dj Sanders was a force to be reckoned with, leading the team with 13 total tackles, including two sacks. Sanders also contributed by forcing a fumble and blocking a field goal, demonstrating his versatility and tenacity on the field. Senior D’ante Keys added 11 tackles, with three of them resulting in losses for Celina.

The Brahmas’ defense recorded 70 total tackles, with five tackles for loss. Junior Brogan Stoner and senior Jack Mercer also contributed significantly, with Stoner adding a quarterback hurry and Mercer recovering a fumble.

Special Teams Contributions

Junior Will Grebe had a busy night on special teams, successfully converting three of four PATs and nailing a 27-yard field goal. Grebe also contributed in the return game, amassing 100 all-purpose yards, including 74 yards on kickoff returns and 26 yards on punt returns.

Despite Bellville’s strong individual performances, the team struggled to maintain their lead in the second half. After taking a 23-14 lead early in the third quarter, the Brahmas were unable to stop Celina’s relentless offense, which scored 35 points in the second half to secure the victory.

Looking Ahead

The Brahmas will look to regroup and capitalize on their strengths as they prepare to host the Stafford Spartans on Friday, September 6. With a 0-1 start to the season, Bellville will aim to secure their first win in front of their home crowd and build momentum for the weeks ahead.
