The Austin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a felony mail theft case and is asking the public for assistance identifying any individuals who may have information related to the incident. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a group of people gathered in the parking lot of Kathy’s Korner on the far east side late Friday evening, Oct. 31, 2025. Investigators believe someone in the area that night may have noticed suspicious behavior or a vehicle passing through that could help advance the case.
Deputies have obtained an image tied to the investigation. Although the photo may appear grainy, authorities say that anyone who recognizes even minor details at the crime scene could prove to be critical.
Mail theft is not a victimless crime, as it can expose residents to identity theft, financial fraud, missed medications, and stolen personal property. Under federal law, tampering with or stealing mail is a serious offense. Title 18 U.S.C. § 1708 makes mail theft punishable by up to five years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.
Investigators stress that community awareness and public cooperation are essential to preventing crime and supporting local law enforcement efforts. The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity promptly, and assist in safeguarding neighborhoods. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Austin County Sheriff’s Office at (979) 865-3111. The Sheriff’s Office thanked the community for its continued support and partnership in maintaining public safety across Austin County.
