Austin County Sheriff’s Office has announced that its deputies who work part-time as School Resource Officers (SROs) will be provided with bullet-resistant shields. This comes as part of a grant provided by the Public Safety Office (P.S.O.) of the Texas Office of the Governor. The shields will be secured in the SRO office of each of the main Bellville School campuses in Bellville I.S.D, where county deputies work as SROs.

The move has been applauded by the Director of Administrative Operations for Bellville I.S.D, Dr. Michael Coopersmith, who expressed his gratitude to the Texas Governor’s Public Safety Office for providing the opportunity and Sheriff Jack Brandes for his office’s work in putting together the application.

In a statement, Sheriff Brandes emphasized that the safety of children is of utmost priority, and his office will continue to explore every opportunity to ensure that all schools within Austin County remain secure learning environments. The provision of bullet-resistant shields to SROs is just one of the measures being taken by the Sheriff’s office to ensure the safety of students in the county.

The use of bullet-resistant shields is becoming increasingly popular as a security measure in schools across the United States. The shields are lightweight, portable, and easy to use, making them an ideal tool for law enforcement officers in situations where they need to protect themselves and others from gunfire.

In addition to providing bullet-resistant shields to SROs, the Austin County Sheriff’s Office is also engaged in other initiatives to promote the safety of schools in the county. These include active shooter training for school staff and students, as well as the installation of surveillance cameras and security systems in schools.

The provision of bullet-resistant shields to SROs in Bellville I.S.D is a significant step towards improving school safety in Austin County. The move demonstrates the commitment of the Sheriff’s office and the Texas Governor’s Public Safety Office to ensure that every child in the county can learn and thrive in a secure environment.
