The Austin County Sheriff’s Office has expanded its aerial capabilities with the addition of a DJI P4 Multispectral drone, made possible through a generous donation from D & L Farms, owned by Dan and Linda White.

The new aircraft becomes part of the Sheriff’s Office’s growing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) program and provides deputies with another valuable tool to serve the citizens of Austin County. While drones are often associated with criminal investigations, their role in public safety extends far beyond law enforcement.

Drones have become an important resource for search and rescue operations, allowing deputies to quickly cover large areas when searching for missing children, elderly residents, or individuals who may be lost or injured. They also play a vital role during natural disasters by helping emergency personnel assess damage, locate stranded residents, identify blocked roadways, and monitor changing conditions without placing first responders in unnecessary danger.

The new drone will support a variety of missions, including crime scene documentation, traffic crash mapping, scene security, disaster response, emergency management, and other public safety operations. The aerial perspective provided by drones allows responders to gather accurate information more efficiently, improving decision-making while reducing the time required to document scenes and reopen roadways.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office also provides aerial support to partner agencies throughout the region when requested. The addition of this aircraft strengthens the department’s ability to respond quickly, share specialized resources, and assist neighboring communities during emergencies and large-scale incidents.

The donation from D & L Farms represents an investment in public safety and modern emergency response capabilities. As drone technology continues to evolve, agencies across Texas are increasingly using unmanned aircraft to improve search and rescue efforts, disaster response, emergency management, and scene documentation while enhancing the safety of both first responders and the public. The addition of the DJI P4 Multispectral drone further expands the Austin County Sheriff’s Office’s ability to serve residents throughout the county and provide assistance to neighboring jurisdictions when aerial support is needed.
