An Austin County 4-H member is working to bring neighbors together through a community service project designed to help residents in the western part of the county.
Cason Cody, an eighth-grade student at Bellville Junior High and a member of Austin County 4-H, has organized the West End Day of Giving, a one-day volunteer event scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026. The project will serve residents in Industry, New Ulm, Welcome, and surrounding West End communities.
The service day is part of a leadership program through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Participants in the program learn about topics such as sustainable agriculture, community leadership, and the challenges some families face, and they are required to complete a service project that benefits their community.
For the West End Day of Giving, volunteers will be organized into teams and assigned to help residents with small outdoor projects and minor home repairs.
Helping Neighbors With Everyday Projects
The event focuses on simple projects that can make a big difference for someone who needs a helping hand. Volunteers may assist with:
- Yard work and cleanup
- Painting
- Small porch or door repairs
- General outdoor maintenance and minor home improvement tasks
All work completed during the event will be provided free of charge as a way to give back to the community.
The project was inspired by Texas A&M University’s annual “Big Event Day of Service,” which brings volunteers together each year to assist residents with community projects. The hope is that the West End Day of Giving will encourage people in Austin County to connect with one another while helping neighbors who need support.
Residents and Volunteers Invited to Participate
Residents in the West End area who could use help with small projects around their homes are encouraged to apply to be part of the service day. Organizers hope to assist individuals who may need extra support, including seniors, veterans, widows, single mothers, and individuals with disabilities.
Applications are available online for both volunteers and residents requesting assistance. Printed applications can also be obtained through the Austin County Extension Office, located at 800 E. Wendt Street in Bellville. For additional information, the office can be reached at (979) 865-2072.
Community members who would like to volunteer will be placed into teams and assigned to assist with projects at participating homes throughout the West End area.
