Blinn College esports earned two victories Tuesday as the Buccaneers cruised to a pair of shutouts in Overwatch and Call of Duty play.Blinn defeated Iowa Western Community College 3-0 (best-of-five series) in an NJCAA Esports Call of Duty bout before blanking Bethany Lutheran College 3-0 (best-of-five) in a National Association of College Esports (NACE) Overwatch tilt.
The Buccaneers continued their strong stretch in Call of Duty action, winning their third consecutive match. Competing for Blinn were David Rodriguez, Landon Campos, Logan Rivera, and Eroin Hernandez. The Bucs are now 3-0 in NJCAAe play this season and 4-2 including NACE matchups.
“I’m proud of how the team played today against a strong Iowa Western team,” Blinn assistant coach and Call of Duty manager Ryan Lucich said. “It was awesome to see plays and concepts we covered in the past week of practice come to fruition, and my players executed them perfectly. We were able to both out-slay and control the map better than Iowa Western.”
Next up for Blinn Call of Duty is a NACE match against Texas A&M International University at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
In the Bucs’ Overwatch match, they rolled past Bethany Lutheran behind the play of Haluk Tanriseven, Andrew Dugas, Matthew Hutchings, Donnivan Straight, and Javier Amezcua.
Blinn is 4-0 in the NACE West-Central 2 Conference and 6-0 between NACE and NJCAAe contests this fall.
“We were coming off some hard losses this past weekend in the Activision Blizzard Collegiate tournament, so this could have been a rough match due to player morale,” said Blinn assistant coach and Overwatch manager Kyle Murto. However, after those losses, we did not allow ourselves to feel defeated, and my players worked hard in the lead-up to today. We are going to work hard to make sure we do not drop any more winnable matches in any league the rest of this semester. The team fought hard today and really showed they still deserve to be considered a top team in the nation. We still have a lot to prove this semester and we will continue to do so.”
Up next for Blinn Overwatch is an NJCAAe showdown with Missouri State University-West Plains at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
