In a significant advancement in residential construction technology, the last few homes of the pioneering 100-house 3D-printed community in Wolf Ranch, Georgetown, are nearing completion. Located about 30 miles from Austin, this groundbreaking project by ICON showcases the potential of large-scale 3D printing to revolutionize homebuilding.

The Vulcan printer, central to this operation, stands out with its impressive dimensionsโ€”over 45 feet wide and weighing 4.75 tons. Unlike typical desktop 3D printers, the Vulcan has been designed to construct entire residential homes, layer by meticulous layer.

ICON initiated the construction of what it claims is the world’s largest 3D-printed community in November 2022. The company highlights several advantages of using 3D printing technology in building homes: increased speed of construction, cost-effectiveness, reduced labor needs, and minimal waste of construction materials.

ICON, emphasized the efficiency brought about by this technology. ย In traditional construction you ย might have five different crews constructing a wall system. With this groundbreaking technology, it’s just one crew and one robot.

The building process involves mixing concrete powder with water, sand, and other additives, which is then fed through a printer. A nozzle extrudes this mixture to form walls with a distinctive corduroy texture. These homes, offering three to four bedrooms, take roughly three weeks to print. Foundations and metal roofs are installed using conventional methods.

This way of building houses offers the durability and practical benefits of the concrete walls, which are designed to be resistant to water, mold, termites, and extreme weather. Additionally, these walls provide substantial insulation against the Texas heat, maintaining cooler indoor temperatures even without heavy reliance on air conditioning.

One drawback of the dense material of the walls is that wireless internet connectivity is severely restricted. To address this it is suggested that homeowners in Wolf Ranch use mesh internet routers to ensure robust Wi-Fi coverage throughout their homes.

Prices for these innovative homes in the “Genesis Collection” range from approximately $450,000 to $600,000, with more than a quarter of the homes already sold. Looking ahead, ICON has even grander aspirations. In collaboration with NASA’s Artemis Moon exploration program, the company is developing a construction system that could potentially be used to build landing pads and shelters on the Moon, marking a significant step forward in extraterrestrial building technologies.
