Americans may want to take a closer look at their pocket change in 2026.
To mark the nation’s semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence — the United States Mint is rolling out a one-year redesign of several circulating coins, along with a wide lineup of special collectible issues. The commemorative program will honor the country’s history, founding ideals, and major moments that shaped the nation.
New designs in everyday pocket change
During 2026, the Mint will introduce new designs on circulating nickels, dimes, and quarters. These coins will enter normal circulation, meaning they will be used in everyday transactions and could turn up in cash registers, tip jars, and spare-change cups across the country.
The new dime will feature an “Emerging Liberty” design, representing a modern interpretation of Liberty.
Quarters released throughout the year will highlight key milestones in American history, including:
- The Mayflower Compact
- The Revolutionary War
- The Declaration of Independence
- The U.S. Constitution
- The Gettysburg Address
Rather than a single quarter design for the year, the Mint plans to release multiple designs, similar to previous circulating programs such as the 50 State Quarters series.
A special 1776–2026 nickel will also be issued to commemorate the anniversary.
According to the U.S. Mint, the goal is to allow Americans to “hold our nation’s storied 250 years of history in the palms of their hands.”
Expanded collector offerings
In addition to circulating coins, the Mint will offer a large number of collectible products in 2026. These will include proof sets, rolls, bags, and special numismatic coins made specifically for collectors. Several well-known coin series — including American Eagle, American Buffalo, and Morgan and Peace dollars — will feature a dual date of “1776 ~ 2026.” Many of these collector coins will also carry a special Liberty Bell privy mark stamped with the number “250.”
The Mint will also release:
- A 2026 Native American $1 Coin depicting the Oneida Tribe aiding George Washington’s forces at Valley Forge.
- American Innovation $1 coins with the special “250” Liberty Bell mark.
- Gold coin and silver medal sets featuring the anniversary privy mark.
A multi-year historical series
A new platinum proof coin series titled “Charters of Freedom” will begin in 2026 and continue through 2028, honoring the nation’s founding documents:
2026: Declaration of Independence
2027: U.S. Constitution
2028: Bill of Rights
The Mint says additional semiquincentennial products and designs will be revealed in the coming months.
What it means for the public
For collectors, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most active years in recent Mint history. For the general public, it means something simpler: everyday change will look different, and each coin will tell a piece of America’s story.
Whether saved as keepsakes or spent at the grocery store, the 2026 coins are intended to mark a once-in-a-generation milestone — the 250th birthday of the United States.
