The Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s two new giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, have officially joined the zoo family. These charismatic pandas arrived from China in October 2024 and were introduced to the public on January 24, 2025, after completing their quarantine period. Their arrival marks the continuation of the zoo’s long-standing commitment to giant panda conservation. Bao Li, a playful three-year-old male, is known for his vocal and interactive nature, delighting visitors with his lively personality. In contrast, Qing Bao, a three-year-old female, exudes a calm and independent demeanor, offering a delightful contrast to her companion. Both pandas will reside at the zoo under a 10-year agreement with China, ensuring their presence until at least April 2034.
To celebrate their arrival, the zoo is hosting “District of Panda” events from January 25 to February 9. These festivities include a Lunar New Year celebration, live performances, educational programs, and themed merchandise to honor the cultural and ecological significance of giant pandas. The events aim to engage the public and welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao to Washington, D.C. For those unable to visit in person, the zoo has relaunched its popular Giant Panda Cam, allowing panda enthusiasts worldwide to observe Bao Li and Qing Bao live online. The camera streams daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST, offering a look into the lives of these amazing animals.
Bao Li and Qing Bao’s arrival highlights the Smithsonian’s dedication to global conservation efforts and public education. Over the next decade, they are expected to serve as ambassadors for giant panda preservation, inspiring millions of visitors and online viewers alike.
