When firefighters answer a call, their mission is usually clear—protect lives and property in the face of danger. But for a group of firefighters in the Chicago suburbs, a single emergency response in 2016 sparked a bigger calling: bringing joy, hope, and companionship to children fighting critical illnesses. Out of that moment, Project Fire Buddies was born.
A Mission of Compassion
Project Fire Buddies is a nonprofit organization that partners firefighters with children battling life-threatening illnesses. Their mission goes far beyond fire safety—they aim to bring light into the lives of families who face some of the toughest challenges imaginable.
Through home visits, surprise fire truck parades, station tours, gifts for birthdays or holidays, and even help with medical supplies, firefighters create unforgettable moments that remind children they are not alone. These simple but powerful acts of kindness show families that their community stands with them.
From Local Idea to National Movement
What began as a single chapter in Illinois has grown into a movement. Today, Project Fire Buddies has more than 120 chapters across 10 states, with over 1,000 firefighter volunteers. In just the last couple of years, the organization has expanded by more than 500%, reaching over 700 children and raising more than $2.7 million to support its mission.
The growth speaks to the impact of the program. Firefighters are trusted community members, and when they step into the role of “buddy,” their presence provides reassurance, comfort, and joy to children and families in crisis.
How Families Get Involved
The process to connect with Project Fire Buddies is simple and sensitive. Families or guardians can submit a referral through the organization’s website using HIPAA-compliant forms. A medical team then reviews the application, and once approved, the child is paired with a local chapter. From there, the firefighters get to work—delivering smiles, creating memories, and making sure the child knows they have a team of heroes in their corner.
Lighting the Way
At its heart, Project Fire Buddies is about more than charity. It’s about community, compassion, and the reminder that even in difficult times, joy can be found in the simplest gestures. Whether it’s a fire truck parade down the block or a firefighter showing up with a birthday gift, the program makes sure these children feel celebrated, supported, and seen.
