Chocolate lovers across Europe may want to keep an eye on where their next sweet treat comes from after a massive shipment of Kit Kat bars vanished during transit. “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate,” a KitKat spokesperson said in a statement.
Food giant Nestlé reported that approximately 12 tons of Kit Kats—equal to 413,793 individual bars—were stolen after leaving a production facility in Italy. The shipment was en route to a distribution center in Poland when it disappeared, and both the truck and its cargo remain missing.
The candy bars were intended for distribution across Europe, meaning the stolen goods could surface through unofficial or unauthorized sales channels. While there is no safety concern tied to the missing products, the company is urging awareness among retailers and consumers.
Each bar from the shipment carries a unique batch code, allowing the products to be traced if they reappear in the marketplace. Anyone who encounters suspicious inventory can identify it through these codes and report it to the appropriate channels or local authorities.
Despite the scale of the theft, Nestlé says the incident involves only a single shipment and will not disrupt overall supply or availability, even with demand increasing ahead of the Easter season.
The case also highlights a growing issue in the logistics world. Cargo theft has been on the rise across Europe, with increasingly sophisticated methods being used to target shipments of all kinds—including, apparently, a truckload of chocolate.
While the criminals made off with a haul that could satisfy a serious sweet tooth, the disappearance underscores a much larger concern for businesses moving goods across long distances: keeping products secure from factory floor to final destination.
