The Virgil & Josephine Gordon Memorial Library in Sealy has proudly served the community since 1979. Unlike many public libraries, Gordon Memorial is a privately funded library. It is not operated by the city or county, though it does receive limited support from both. The heart of its funding comes from a generous endowment established by Dr. Virgil and Mrs. Josephine Gordon, whose legacy continues to sustain the library’s mission. Over the years, that generosity has been echoed by countless individuals, families, and businesses who have contributed to the library’s operations and programs. At its core, Gordon Memorial Library is funded by generosity—not tax dollars—which allows it to serve Austin County without being a burden on the local community.

Why Support Matters

Operating the library on what is considered a basic budget requires approximately $200,000 annually. This includes staffing, building maintenance, insurance, books, and educational programs. This figure does not account for major repairs, such as the need to eventually replace the library’s aging 15-year-old air conditioning system or outdated computer equipment.

Currently, the library receives about $30,000 in combined annual support from the City of Sealy and Austin County, with an additional $80,000 coming from local foundations. This still leaves a significant funding gap. While the Gordon Endowment can cover a portion of the shortfall, continuing to withdraw $80,000 annually from it would deplete the endowment within three years.

The library’s goal is to maintain the current $200,000 budget while raising an additional $80,000 each year through private support. This will help preserve the endowment and ensure long-term stability.

The Giving Tree Program

To support these efforts, the Gordon Memorial Library invites donors to join the Giving Tree Program—a lasting way to contribute while being permanently recognized for their support. Donors who give $500 or more will have their name—or that of a loved one—engraved on a plaque and added to the library’s Giving Tree display. Contribution levels include:

  • $500 – Butterfly
  • $1,000 – Bronze Leaf
  • $5,000 – Silver Leaf
  • $10,000 – Gold Leaf
  • $15,000 – Branch
  • $25,000 – Rock

Monthly payment options are available for all giving levels, as long as the full donation amount is completed by December 31st of the current year. Donors may also choose to include a brief message or dedication on their plaque. Anonymity is also available upon request.
