TRANSPORTATION SHOP HELP Perform daily cleaning, service of vehicles, preventative maintenance and help mechanics perform routine repairs and maintain all district vehicles. Prepare vehicles for field trips. Service and maintain district mowers and lawn equipment. Operate school buses that transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. Reports to: Director of Transportation + Fleet Services Location: Transportation Services QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE + SKILLS Must be 18 years of age Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to communicate effectively Ability to operate bus MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: Maintenance and Repairs Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt ● Perform visual inspection of vehicles and report any defect or repairs as needed. ● Perform minor maintenance and repairs as directed. May include repairing seat surfaces, replacing bulbs and lenses, and replacing windshield wipers. ● Perform routine vehicle maintenance according to established preventative maintenance schedules and procedures and keep accurate, up-to-date records. ● Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts and components. ● Perform other maintenance and repairs as directed by the lead mechanic. ● Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment, clean restrooms, offices, take out trash, all other duties as assigned. Vehicle Operation & Student Management ● Maintain valid CDL and School Bus Driver credentials to driver bus routes, trips and shuttles when necessary. ● Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules. ● Complete standard DOT pre-trip and post-trip inspections as well as student checks. ● Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. ● Complete required reports. ● Keep the assigned bus clean and fueled. ● Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street. ● Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administer
Safety ● Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. ● Inspect the bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving. ● Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector. ● Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately. ● Install snow chains during inclement weather. ● Report any hazardous conditions along the route. ● Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. ● Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. ● Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to a supervisor. Service ● Perform routine daily service as directed including checking tire air pressure, checking oil and other fluid levels, and cleaning the bus both inside and out. Fill tires and replace fluids as needed. ● Fuel buses and maintain records for use. ● Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance. Other ● Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office. ● Work irregular hours as needed. ● Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification. ● Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. ● Other duties as assigned. Posture: Moderate standing, frequent kneeling/ squatting, bending/ stooping, pushing/ pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Motion: Moderate walking, climbing; frequent grasping/ squeezing, wrist flexion/ extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving. Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis. NUMBER OF DAYS WORKED: 225 Days (8 hrs per day) COMPENSATION SCALE: District Hourly Hiring Schedule
