HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DEFINITION
To operate a variety of heavy equipment involving construction and maintenance activities on a regular basis; and to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, landscape, parks, drainage systems, traffic control devices and related facilities as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from higher level staff.
May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level equipment operators or maintenance staff.

Essential duties and responsibilities
. Operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as gradalls, tractors, riding mowers, push-mowers, compressors, backhoes, rollers, sewer machines, dump trucks, front-end loaders, jackhammers, and various other equipment in support of the most complex and difficult maintenance and construction operations.
. Operate all municipal heavy equipment involving road grading, ditch digging, clearing and cleaning equipment.
. Set, form and pour concrete to install drive ways and sidewalks; install catch basins; repair, replace, and clean catch basins to ensure proper drainage.
. Participate in the repair and maintenance of parks, publicly owned properties, city streets, roads and rights-of-way; excavate drainage ditches and backfill jobs upon completion.
