The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present the webinar “Grow More Grass with Prescribed Fire” on Nov. 3 as part of its ongoing Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, RWFM, Stewardship Series.
“The webinar will help ranchers navigate the delicate balance of nurturing natural resources while shifting the competitive advantage to grasses, open spaces and working lands,” said event speaker Morgan Treadwell, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension range specialist, San Angelo.
The event will run from noon to 1 p.m. Cost is $35, and advance registration is required at https://tx.ag/RWFMNovWeb22 by Nov. 2 at noon.
After payment has been received, a follow-up email will be sent from the event organizer with instructions on how to access the webinar.
One general Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit will be available.
“Maintaining the balance between the herbaceous plant community and brush is tricky,” Treadwell said. “But more importantly shifting the competitive advantage trees and brush have over native, perennial grasses on our Texas rangelands is tough.”
She said shifting and maintaining the competitive edge to grasses during drought, wildfires, extreme climatic swings and grazing bouts can be even more daunting.
“So how do we grow more grass when everything wants to eat it and outcompete it? The answer is in our stewardship choices.”

Treadwell will cover the following topics:
- Managing, optimizing and enhancing native perennial grasses.
- Challenges in plant communities constantly threatened by woody brush, such as honey mesquite and juniper species.
- Tips, tools and resources available to grow more grass and keep encroaching brush and opportunistic forbs out of grasslands.
