Dan Russell Owen, Jr.
June 3, 1941 – May 4, 2025
The Austin County community joins many across Texas in mourning the passing of Dan Russell Owen, Jr., who died peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born in Oklahoma City on June 3, 1941, Dan’s life was marked by dedication—to his family, his country, his career, and the communities he loved. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rebecca Thompson Owen, his son, Dan Thomas Owen, and his loyal German Shepherd, KiKi “Runner.”
Dan’s professional path took him from First National Bank in Lubbock to roles with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and leadership positions in several banks throughout Texas. He earned degrees from Texas Tech University and the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at SMU, and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.
A man of faith and deep-rooted values, Dan was an active Freemason and devoted countless hours volunteering with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He served as Vice Chairman of the Group Ticket Sales Committee and Chairman of the Appaloosa Horse Show Committee. He was also Treasurer and longtime member of the Tejas Vaqueros, and a proud member of the Valley Lodge Trail Ride Association (VLTRA)—one of the oldest trail rides sanctioned by the Houston Rodeo. Each February, the VLTRA makes a 75-mile journey to downtown Houston, celebrating western heritage, friendship, and family values—principles Dan upheld throughout his life.
In his later years, Dan and his family made their home in Simonton, drawn by his love for horses, the outdoors, and the tranquility of the countryside.
Dan will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, leadership, and lifelong devotion to community and tradition. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
