Texas counties are facing financial pressures on both sides of a highly politicized debate over their role in enforcing federal immigration laws. Just look at Dallas County.

Two cattle ranchers in the Texas Hill Country can breathe a sigh of relief — at least for now. Terrell and Pat Graham have been in a three year court battle with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to defend their property rights and they finally won.

After an afternoon of debate, the Texas Senate late Tuesday voted 20-11 along party lines to advance a controversial immigration measure to ban sanctuary cities in the state.

A reinterpretation of the state’s school finance law will leave $100 million in the accounts of some of the state’s property wealthy districts — and will leave a hole of that size in an already tight state budget.

Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday asked lawmakers to immediately take on so-called “sanctuary cities,” the state’s broken child welfare system and a convention of states to amend the U.S. Constitution.
