The Blinn College esports team split a pair of one-on-one NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate matches Thursday.
The Buccaneers’ defeated his opponent from Rose State College 3-1, while Kiara Moline fell to Rose State 3-0. Both matches were played under a best-of-five format and served as the regular-season finales for both competitors.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game where players, either in one-on-one or four-on-four matches, aim to knock each other off a combat stage. The objective is for players to inflict damage to increase their opponents’ likelihood of being knocked off the platform. In singles play, each player has a set number of lives or “stocks,” and the match is won by reducing the opponent’s stocks to zero. In crew battles, teams take turns battling, with stock carryover. The team that eliminates all opposing players’ stocks first wins. Series are often best-of-three or best-of-five.
Cole improved to 9-5 in the NJCAAe Central 1 Conference and will now turn his attention to the postseason.
“Gage has continued to showcase his consistency and adaptability all year long, and this win should help him secure a strong seed heading into the regional playoffs,” Blinn head coach and Super Smash Bros. manager Kyle Murto said. “His ability to perform under pressure and his unique playstyle continue to set him apart.”
Molina ended her season with a 4-10 mark in the Central 2 Conference.
“Kiara’s record doesn’t reflect just how far she’s progressed this season,” Murto said. “After competing on our junior varsity team last semester, she earned her spot on the varsity roster this year and has gone toe-to-toe with top-level talent all season long. Her growth, determination, and work ethic have been incredible to watch, and this season was a big step forward for her development as a competitor.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 national championships since 1987.
