A year-long narcotics investigation targeting a drug trafficking organization operating in Austin County has resulted in multiple arrests, significant drug seizures, and the arrest of an alleged primary supplier, according to a February 19, 2026 press release from the Westside Narcotics Task Force (WNTF).
Investigators began the operation in 2025 after identifying a drug trafficking organization believed to be distributing narcotics throughout the region. Following several arrests and seizures during the investigation, authorities identified Lagwentis Adams as the suspected source of supply.
On February 18, 2026, members of the Westside Narcotics Task Force, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, Houston Police Department Narcotics Division, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, executed a search warrant at Adamsโ residence.
The search resulted in Adamsโ arrest and the seizure of approximately:
3.5 kilograms (about 7.7 pounds) of cocaineย
4.5 kilograms (about 9.9 pounds) of crystal methamphetamineย
$174,372 in U.S. currency
Authorities reported the overall investigation led to six arrests and the seizure of a combined total of:
7 kilograms (about 15.4 pounds) of cocaineย
9.5 kilograms (about 20.9 pounds) of crystal methamphetamineย
$228,122 in cash
Estimated Street Value
Based on typical narcotics trafficking valuations in Texas, the seized drugs carry an estimated combined street value between $400,000 and $650,000, depending on purity levels and how the substances would have been distributed. Cocaine commonly sells for $30,000โ$40,000 per kilogram at the distribution level, while methamphetamine values may range from $20,000โ$40,000 per kilogram when divided into retail quantities.
Potential Criminal Penalties
While formal charges will ultimately be determined by prosecutors, cases involving these quantities commonly qualify for federal drug trafficking charges. Under federal law, possession with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, or 500 grams or more of methamphetamine can carry mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years to life in federal prison, along with fines of up to $10 million for individuals. If prosecuted under Texas law, possession of more than 400 grams of a controlled substance is considered a first-degree felony, punishable by 15 to 99 years or life in prison and fines up to $250,000.
Multi-Agency Effort
The Austin County Sheriffโs Office credited strong interagency cooperation for the outcome of the investigation, thanking WNTF partners as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Marshals Service, Houston Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their role in dismantling the trafficking operation.
The Westside Narcotics Task Force operates as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) unit covering five counties and includes investigators from the Austin County Sheriffโs Office, Bellville Police Department, Sealy Police Department, Hempstead Police Department, Waller County Sheriffโs Office, Fayette County Sheriffโs Office, Colorado County Sheriffโs Office, Lavaca County Sheriffโs Office, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The investigation remains ongoing. Please remember that all suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
