ACAD’s Role in the Community
ACAD plays a vital role in the local property tax system, ensuring fair and accurate assessments for all taxable properties. Operating under a system of checks and balances, the district determines market values, processes exemptions (such as homestead and agricultural valuations), and provides certified tax rolls that local governments use to set tax rates.
The Board of Directors oversees district operations, including hiring the chief appraiser, setting the budget, and appointing the Appraisal Review Board (ARB), which handles property disputes. However, the board does not determine property values or appraisal methods. Instead, the chief appraiser manages daily operations, oversees staff, and ensures compliance with state guidelines.
With its newly installed leadership, the board remains committed to maintaining an efficient and transparent appraisal process, serving the needs of Austin County residents while supporting essential public services like schools, infrastructure, and law enforcement.
