Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, brought a one-of-a-kind spectacle to its Texas Independence Day celebration—armadillo racing. While the historic venue has played host to legendary performers like Willie Nelson and even Hollywood’s Kevin Bacon, on Sunday, March 2, the spotlight shifted to an unexpected set of competitors: Texas’ official state animal, the armadillo.
The armadillo races took place in the Gruene Hall beer garden from 3 to 5 p.m., drawing a crowd eager to witness the surprisingly speedy critters in action. This marked the first time the races had been included in the venue’s Texas Independence Day celebration, though armadillo racing has been part of Gruene Hall’s history for decades. Photos dating back to the 1980s show the quirky tradition in full swing, making this year’s revival a nostalgic nod to the past. Spectators gathered around the racing area, cheering as five armadillos, each with their own quirky personality, scurried toward the finish line. Some contestants shot off at lightning speed, while others seemed more interested in taking a leisurely stroll, much to the amusement of the crowd.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Gruene Hall aimed to make this Texas Independence Day event more special than ever. While past celebrations focused on beer, food, and retail specials, this year’s festivities brought an extra layer of excitement with the return of armadillo racing. Sponsored by Lone Star Beer, the event created a fun and lively experience for all in attendance. The festivities didn’t stop at the races. Guests enjoyed 189-cent Lone Star Beer in honor of Texas’ 189 years of independence, adding to the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, the sounds of classic country music filled the air as San Antonio-based band The Texases took the stage. Known as “The Greatest 90s Country Band in the Game Today,” the group had the crowd singing along to timeless hits from Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Garth Brooks.
The event proved to be a lively and unforgettable celebration of Texas pride, blending history, entertainment, and a touch of good-natured competition. Whether attendees were there for the music, the beer, or to witness the unexpected thrill of armadillo racing, this Texas Independence Day celebration was one for the books.
