The Buccaneers, seeded fourth in the eight-team tournament, will take on top-seeded Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) at 6 p.m. on Sunday with a spot in the national championship match at stake.
Competing for Blinn on Friday were Cesar Chogoya, Gabriel Lopez, George Francis, Pierce Ray, William Rossley, and Joshua Manning.
“I feel like we performed amazingly, but there is always room for improvement all around,” Chogoya said. “Overall, this team can and will go places into the future, and I believe it. I believe that this team is ready to go against NOVA if we all put in maximum effort.”
Blinn assistant coach Kyle Murto, who oversees the program’s Overwatch team, said he was proud of his team’s decisive win and looks forward to seeing how they fare against the tournament’s top team.
“I believe today’s game went exceedingly well. The first map was a little shaky but as we progressed, we definitely began to clean things up,” Murto said. “After map one, there isn’t much to say – they were very simple and dominating wins for the last two maps.
“Going into this next match Sunday is exciting, as we have been preparing for NOVA since the beginning of the season. We knew from day one that they would be one of the top contenders for a national title, so being able to finally compete against the team we have prepared for this entire semester will be a good test for us.”
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
