As schools across Texas close for summer break, many families face an important concern that often goes unnoticed โ€” making sure children continue receiving reliable daily meals while school cafeterias are closed.

To help bridge that gap, the Texas Department of Agriculture administers two major summer nutrition programs designed to provide free meals to children throughout the summer months: the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO).

Both programs work toward the same goal โ€” helping ensure children continue having access to healthy meals even when school is not in session.

The programs provide free meals for children and teens 18 years old and younger at approved locations across Texas. Depending on the site, meals may include breakfast, lunch, snacks, or supper.

Meal sites are commonly located at schools, libraries, parks, churches, community centers, and nonprofit organizations. In many communities, these locations become an important resource for working families during the summer months.

The Summer Food Service Program, often referred to as SFSP, focuses heavily on serving children in lower-income areas where a large percentage of students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals during the regular school year.

Meanwhile, the Seamless Summer Option allows participating school districts to continue operating meal service during the summer using many of the same systems already in place during the school year. This helps schools continue feeding children with fewer administrative changes.

Both programs are federally funded through the United States Department of Agriculture, with oversight and administration handled in Texas by the Texas Department of Agriculture through its SquareMeals division.

Approved sponsors and organizations that operate meal sites receive federal reimbursement for the meals they serve. Eligible sponsors can include school districts, nonprofit groups, local governments, churches, and community organizations.

Texas officials encourage families to take advantage of the programs, especially during months when grocery costs can increase due to children being home during the day.
