Every Texan deserves safe access to the world beyond their front door. For low-income older adults and people with disabilities, something as simple as a wheelchair ramp can be the key to freedom, independence, and safety. Thatโs where the Texas Ramp Project (TRP) steps in.
What is the Texas Ramp Project?
The Texas Ramp Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building wheelchair ramps for individuals in financial need who have limited mobility. Working closely with local healthcare providers who identify eligible individuals, TRP ensures that no one is denied access due to lack of resources. Ramps are always provided at no cost to the recipient and are built without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, age, or gender.
What Do They Do?
TRP volunteers construct safe, durable ramps that meet ADA guidelines, allowing recipients to safely leave and return to their homes. These ramps not only restore independence but also bring peace of mind to families and caregivers. In many cases, they make it possible for individuals to remain in their homes instead of being moved to care facilities.
What makes the Texas Ramp Project especially unique is its use of volunteer labor, which dramatically reduces costsโkeeping the average ramp at about a third the price of a commercial build. For under $1,000 in materials and a few hours of volunteer time, lives are changed forever.
A History of Service
The project began in 1985 when members of the Richardson Kiwanis Club were asked to build a ramp for a friend. That one act of kindness evolved into the Dallas Ramp Project and ultimately, in 2006, into the statewide Texas Ramp Project. Since then, TRP has expanded into 145 counties across Texas and celebrated the construction of its 30,000th ramp in May 2025. Altogether, those ramps would stretch over 154 miles if laid end to end.

Important Notes About Eligibility
While the Texas Ramp Project does incredible work, it is a volunteer-driven organization and not all referrals can be accepted. The local surveyor or region coordinator may decline a request for reasons such as:
- The client already has an accessible route.
- The requested ramp location does not connect to a driveway, street, or usable path.
- The client is located outside TRPโs current service area.
- Site conditions are unsafe or unsanitary.
- The ramp requires specialized construction beyond the scope of volunteers.
- Financial need is not demonstrated.
