PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Cheyenne Trader had a big game at the plate to open the doubleheader as she had four RBIs to help No. 19 Blinn College softball past Lamar State College – Port Arthur 6-1 Sunday afternoon in Port Arthur.

Port Arthur did get revenge in the second game with a 9-1 victory to split the doubleheader. With the split, Blinn’s record moves to 27-16 overall and 12-4 in the Region XIV South Zone standings.

Shop Austin County 300 x 600 Second TryTrader’s big game at the plate and Faith Genoway shutting down Port Arthur was more than enough for a 6-1 Blinn victory to open the doubleheader.

Trader went 2 for 4 at the plate with a single and a double while knocking in four of the six Buccaneer runs. Courtney White and Ashley Langston had the other RBIs in the win. Genoway pitched all seven innings and gave up only four hits and one earned one while striking out three to pick up the win.

Blinn got going in the third when Meghann Wrinkle singled and Katie Andrie reached on a fielder’s choice and then Trader brought both in with a single to right to give Blinn a 2-0 lead.

Trader was back at it in the fifth. This time, Andrie and Jordin Wilkins reached with singles and Trader brought both in with a double to left to give the Buccaneers a 4-0 advantage. Port Arthur did score one in the bottom of the fifth to get within 4-1.

Blinn added some insurance runs in the seventh when Andrie started the inning with a single and was brought in by a double by White to center for a 5-1 lead. Langston brought in the sixth run with a single to left to make the score 6-1 and that would hold up as the final score.

Port Arthur 9 – Blinn 1

Port Arthur jumped all over Blinn with six runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 9-1 victory in six innings to earn the split.

Katy Sawyer did have a solid game at the plate with two singles and a double in a 3 for 3 performance. Nicole Garcia belted two doubles and drove in one run in the loss.

Port Arthur scored four runs in the first inning and then single runs in the second, third and fifth to take a 7-0 lead.

Blinn did get on the board in the sixth as Sawyer singled with one out and then was brought in by a fielder’s choice by Garcia to get within 7-1. Unfortunately, Port Arthur would end the game in the bottom half with two more runs to make the final 9-1.

Blinn will next be on the road on Saturday, April 9 for a doubleheader at Alvin Community College beginning at noon.
