Tyler Junior College reeled off a game-winning third-quarter run to upend the No. 24 Blinn College women’s basketball team 72-62 in a Region XIV matchup Saturday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers fell to 21-6 overall and 8-3 in region play.


Blinn led 44-39 with less than 4 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Apaches responded with a 16-3 run to jump ahead for good.

Tyler carried a 55-47 advantage into the fourth period, and the Bucs never came closer than six points the rest of the way.

“We got outplayed and outcoached today,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “This wasn’t one of our best games, but we’ll just have to learn from it on Monday and get back to work Wednesday.”

Blinn trailed the Apaches 14-13 after the first quarter but bounced back to take a 34-30 halftime lead.

Sophomore guardย Jonesha Nealย paced the Bucs with 18 points, followed by 16 for sophomore guardย Ja’Nya Thomasย and 10 for freshman guardย Jasey Campbell.

Blinn resumes play with a region road trip to Panola College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Carthage, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50ย NJCAA national championships since 1987.
