The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Floriculture Contest is an annual event that challenges Texas 4-H and FFA students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in floriculture, a specialized branch of horticulture focused on the cultivation and marketing of flowering and ornamental plants. This field encompasses things like plant propagation, greenhouse management, floral design, and pest control, supporting industries such as landscaping, floristry, and commercial plant sales. Floriculture plays a vital role in agriculture, blending plant science, business, and design to supply flowers for events, holidays, and everyday use.
During the competition, students engaged in various activities such as plant identification, floral arrangement, and problem-solving related to the floriculture industry. With previous contests featuring up to 96 teams from across the state, the event is highly competitive and provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and industry-relevant knowledge.
As part of HLSR’s broader mission to promote agricultural education, the Floriculture Contest helps students develop practical skills while emphasizing teamwork and critical thinking. Sealy FFA’s remarkable performance at this prestigious event highlights the dedication, talent, and hard work of its members, further cementing the chapter’s reputation for excellence in agricultural education and competition.
Congratulations to the Sealy FFA Floriculture Team on their outstanding achievement!
