The fourth-ranked Blinn College women’s golf team played well at the NCAA Division I-heavy Islander Classic on Monday and Tuesday and finished fourth.

The Buccaneers placed themselves among three NCAA programs and finished just three strokes shy of tournament-host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for third place.

As a team, Blinn shot 57-over par across three rounds of play.

NCAA Division I program Houston Christian University shot 38-over for first place.

Blinn bested NCAA DI programs East Texas A&M University, Lamar University, and Valparaiso University, as well as NJCAA teams New Mexico Junior College (ranked fifth), Weatherford College (ranked eighth), and McLennan Community College (ranked 11th).

“This was a good challenge for our team,” said Bucs assistant Gary Belt, who leads the women’s team during tournaments. “On a course just above sea level with the coast just a couple miles away, we were presented with some challenges in how the course felt and played today. I thought we answered that challenge quite well, and we feel good about what we did here. We will walk away from this tournament having learned a few things.”

Freshman ย led Blinn with a 13-over performance for 11th place. Behind Lawrence was sophomoreย Daniah Syed, who shot 15-over for 14th. Freshmanย Ava Murcerย carded a 13-over for 18th, sophomoreย Abiha Syedย shot 21-over for 27th, and sophomoreย Lillie Websterย was 34th at 25-over.

Up next for the Bucs is the two-day Riverbend Intercollegiate hosted by Houston Christian beginning Monday, March 9, in Sugar Land, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 andย capturedย 53ย national championships since 1987.
