On October 14, 2025 a massive methamphetamine seizure in Houston was led by the Westside Narcotics Task Force (HIDTA), with assistance from the Houston Police Department Tactical Unit. The collaboration resulted in a seizure of approximately 200 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from a residence in the 8000 block of Emmott Road in Houston.
The seizure was the culmination of a months-long investigation into an international drug trafficking organization responsible for transporting and distributing methamphetamine across multiple states. Investigators identified a primary supplier within the network and arrested Orlando Gomez-Garcia, who was found in possession of approximately 10 kilograms of methamphetamine during the operation. A search of his residence uncovered an additional 190 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, along with evidence of a clandestine conversion laboratory used to process and re-crystallize the drug for street distribution.
The total seizure has an estimated street value exceeding $4 million. Wholesale methamphetamine prices in Texas currently range from $20,000 to $50,000 per kilogram, depending on purity, market demand, and distribution method. In smaller quantities—such as gram-level sales common on the street—the retail value can climb even higher, pushing the total street impact to $8 to $10 million once divided into individual doses. The seizure represents a major disruption to a trafficking pipeline capable of distributing tens of thousands of doses throughout Texas and surrounding states.
Gomez-Garcia has been charged with state drug violations by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Because of the scale of the operation and the presence of a conversion lab, the case may also be subject to federal prosecution. Under Texas law, possession of 400 grams or more of methamphetamine constitutes an enhanced first-degree felony, carrying a potential sentence of 10 to 99 years or life in prison and fines up to $100,000. Given that Gomez-Garcia was allegedly in possession of more than 200,000 grams, prosecutors could pursue the maximum penalty allowed.
If prosecuted at the federal level, the penalties increase further. Under federal sentencing guidelines, trafficking 50 grams or more of pure methamphetamine carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, with quantities in the hundreds of kilograms eligible for a life sentence. Additional enhancements—such as operating a drug laboratory, leadership in a trafficking network, or intent to distribute—can extend prison terms and significantly raise fines. If convicted, Gomez-Garcia faces the potential of spending the remainder of his life in prison.
The Westside Narcotics Task Force covers a five-county area and includes investigators from the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Bellville Police Department, Sealy Police Department, Hempstead Police Department, Waller County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado County Sheriff’s Office, Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The task force credited the multi-agency collaboration for successfully dismantling a major source of methamphetamine intended for distribution throughout Southeast Texas.
