One of the biggest hurdles we face in space travel is that we simply can’t go fast enough.  When it can take up to six months or more to reach Mars and billions of dollars of funding it is easy to see why our space program is so limited.  For the average person, it can be a hard thing to grasp just how vast space is.  And, our current rocket technology is just not good enough.

This is primarily because there is no way to carry enough fuel along to travel any kind of meaningful distance (not to mention the fact that it’s slow).  But now, a new rocket in development might change the way we look at the distance of space.  The Magnetoplasma Rocket is a plasma rocket that can travel ten times faster than the chemical rockets, uses 1/10 the amount of fuel, and can transport cargo more economically than any existing space technology.

Plasma is the new fuel that is being utilized.  The biggest drawback to it is that it can burn into the millions of degrees and melting just about anything that would act as a “tail pipe”.  So, to overcome this challenge, scientists utilize a magnetic field to act as the “tail pipe” thus allowing for higher levels of propulsion from the vastly increased temperatures achieved.

The video below goes into great detail about how this new technology will impact not only space travel but, our everyday lives as well:
